Rosatom and Watts Battery have agreed to create energy storage devices for multi-apartment residential complexes

Business direction Energy Storage of the Rosatom Fuel Division and the Russian technological developer of Watts Battery storage devices (Watts Battery LLC) have entered into a strategic partnership agreement and have begun joint development of new generation stationary energy storage systems for multi-apartment residential complexes.

The rapid growth of cities is increasingly limited by the capacity of distribution networks. The lack of capacity prevents the connection of new buildings, charging infrastructure and modern engineering systems, while upgrading networks using classical methods requires many years of investment. The new development is designed to be an effective alternative. It is assumed that the systems built into residential buildings will help to offset peak loads, provide backup power to apartments, elevators and emergency lighting, as well as improve the parameters of the supplied electricity. Structurally, the product will be ready to participate in demand management programs as the necessary regulatory environment develops.

Industry experts predict a steady growth of the Russian stationary energy storage market. According to estimates by the Association for the Development of Renewable Energy (ARWE), the average annual demand for storage capacity will reach 1.1 by 2030. GW (6.6 GWh). The Ministry of Energy plans to commission pilot facilities with a total capacity of up to 600 MW over the next year. Overall, the forecast for total demand for lithium-ion battery systems by 2030 is 14 GWh. Against the background of the global transformation of the electric power industry and the increasing role of distributed resources, especially in conjunction with renewable sources, a new product from industry leaders promptly closes the demand for reliable and technological solutions for megacities.

As part of the cooperation, Rosatom is responsible for the supply of lithium-ion batteries and battery management systems, Watts Battery is responsible for power electronics and a software management platform. The agreement establishes the joint rights of the parties to interface solutions that ensure seamless integration of components into a single product. The finished product will be promoted under the combined Watts Battery – Rosatom brand. In addition, the companies intend to work together to increase the degree of localization of key components in Of Russia.
